Tempered glass is made from normal annealed glass via a thermal tempering process in which the glass is subjected to heat till its softening point and then rapidly cooled. This gives the glass its strength. A fully tempered glass is used in most modern glass facade, where glass strength is required. A fully tempered glass is recommended for windows that are on high floors or skylights where people are required to stand on top for cleaning. Also areas where risk of thermal breakage or impact breakage is high, fully tempered glass should be used so as to avoid risk of injury. Glass strength is also required in point fixed glazing, bolted and patch fittings.
Tempered glass is made by uniformly heating annealed glass to a temperature of up to 700°C and immediately cooling it. The glass first goes through the furnace, carried in by rollers, where it is heated using three modes - conduction, convection and radiation. The rollers conduct the heat, while the coils help in the radiation of heat. The convection effect is brought about by hot air blowing through the nozzles, thus circulating the heat inside the furnace and making sure that the glass is heated evenly on all sides. This super heated glass then undergoes a rapid cooling process by a uniform and simultaneous blast of air on both surfaces.After tempering, the stress pattern developed by the glass is high, and the mechanical strength of tempered glass is four to five times higher than that of annealed glass.

When tempered glass is broken, all the stored energy is released at once and the glass breaks into small pieces.
Broken Toughened Glass
Tempered glass is four to five times stronger than annealed glass of the same size and thickness against impact.Tempered glass has higher thermal strength, and it can withstand high temperature changes up to 250°C.Tempered glass is considered as safety glass. It is difficult to break and even in the event of a breakage, disintegrates into small relatively harmless globules.Tempering does not alter the basic characteristics of glass such as light transmission and solar radiant heat properties of normal glass.The glass surface after heat treatment has the same resistance to surface damage as annealed glass.Tempered glass cannot be cut or altered.One problem that can also exist with tempered glass is spontaneous breakage, where the glass can break for no apparent reason. Spontaneous breakage occurs when nickel sulfide stones increase in size due to repeated heating and cooling.

Tempering increases tensile strength, thermal shock resistance, and safety of normal glass. It also increases its heat with standing capacity. Because of these properties, tempered glass is preferred in applications where strength, safety and thermal resistance are important considerations.
Tempered glass is specifically designed for use in areas where there is a high risk of contact and breakage. It is not harder or softer than annealed glass but is tougher. Tempering does not make glass more porous nor is tempered glass more prone to scratches than normal glass. Tempered glass offers a wide variety of uses in industries including building, manufacturing, automotive, to name a few.There is a wide scope for the use of tempered glass in the building industry.

Glass is a type of solid material which is typically brittle and transparent. Glass is commonly used for bottles, glasses, furniture, windows, building facades, and even eyewear. Glass is defined as an inorganic product of fusion which has been cooled through its transition into the solid state without crystallizing. Most glass contains silica as its main component.

Architects and decorators are innovatively using glass for a variety of applications from skylights to partitions, balustrades to staircases, and many-many more that make our surroundings look more spacious and beautiful. Energy Performance Glass
There are various choices available to the informed buyer to save on energy costs and get all aesthetic and psychological benefits of glass. Coated and tinted glass products and insulating glazing units can be used to control the flow of energy into and out of a building. In a hot environment like India, solar control glasses can be used to dramatically reduce the effect of the sun's heat, minimizing the need for air-conditioning. Solar control glass, usually either body tinted(absorbing) or coated(reflecting), is used to reduce unwanted solar radiant light and heat energy transmitting through glass. Similarly, in colder environments, low emissivity( low-e) glass can be used which reflects heat back into building.

Sound Control Glass
In humans, hearing takes place whenever vibrations of frequencies from 15 hertz to about 20,000 hertz reach the inner ear. The need to restrict sound arriving from the external environment means that glass should be able to shield and insulate while satisfying more sophisticated design standards. The most common type of glass used in noise control are laminated glass and insulating glass(double glazed). Laminated glass incorporates a special PVB interlayer, which absorbs some of the sound energy, reducing its passage. The acoustic PVB interlayer can be utilized to reduce the noise level experienced.
